I’ve often thought about what impact the increasing speed of technology spreading and being accepted has on society individuals. In the Chapters read for our class this week in Citizen Marketers they gave historical context to the change created by new technologies beginning with the Guttenberg printing press all the way up to blogging. Generally the theme set forth by Citizen Marketers is that with more voice comes more choice and freedom. Although as different technology has made access to ideas easier this is also true for institutions of power. The chapter itself is very conscious of this fact. When getting to the present date it would continually remind its readers to be aware of the importance communication with the consumers. Capitalism still tries to homogenize the way many institutions look at the effects and resistance created by more access to information and being heard. It is true that unlike any time before it companies now have to be conscious of and consider two way communications. No longer can companies afford to yell slogans directly at their audience they now must communicate with them. The book uses the example of the “Dell Hell” blog that in many ways is a good analogy for the necessity of companies to adapt to this new flow of information or be lost in its wake.
