From time to time I've dipped my feet in to the podcasting realm. Truthfully the time it takes to do it right, and my limited free time always prevented me from being able to see through most of my ideas. This article gives a pretty good overview of ways to improve your sound quality, and make sure your podcast sounds professional. Which is one of the most important things.
For editing you should definitely check out Audacity. Don't go to audacity.com, as a far as I can tell that's just a company that only exists on paper to do some sort of immoral or shady financial transactions.
Also, it should almost go without saying, but once you are ready to put your work out there, you must get on to iTunes, it is the place you must go to get recognized. A personal website will do wonders as well, but without iTunes noone knows you're there. It's free advertising and marketing! Use it!
